Ask Joel:
RV Questions
A reader wrote in with an interesting question:
Q.:
Is there some product that can be applied to the tires to REALLY help stop dry rot? I would just hope in this era there would be something that helps that you would not be afraid to endorse. – Dan
A.:
Dan - There is nothing I have heard of that will prevent dry rot. Ozone in the air causes it, and UV rays speed it up. I talked to my tire dealer the last time I had to replace RV tires because of dry rot. (I’ve replaced two sets in 12 years.) He said tires should never be cleaned with things like 409, Fantastic, or other household cleaners. And the tire cleaning products and tire dressings sold in automotive stores are just as bad! Many of those cleaners are tough on the plastics in the tire compounds and break them down faster, shortening tire life. Cover them, or take them off and store them are your best options.
Basically, the only thing you can do to forestall dry rot is cover your tires from the sun or store them in a cool, dry place. You can also place something like a piece of wood or bricks between the ground and the tires.
Dan, you may want to spend some time contemplating a tire dry rot cure. If you come up with a solution, you’ll be rich!
