Flintlock Campground, Boone, NC

By Jack Kean
Posted August 2011

Flintlock Campground is located about three miles south of Boone, N.C., on Highway 105. There are a few pull-through sites, but most are gravel or concrete back-in sites. Our site, which bordered the creek, was large enough for a 39-foot unit. Our 33-foot rig fit quite nicely. We pushed our tow dolly to the back and off to the side a bit before backing in. There was just enough space for our small car to park in front of the RV.

Flintlock is in a valley surrounded by trees and hills, or mountains if you prefer. The elevation is approximately 3,300 feet. Dogs are generally welcomed, but there is little space for walking them. The sites are narrow, with enough room to extend your sides and awning, but not much more. A garbage can is provided on each site and the park is well kept. There are a number of sites rented for the season.

Flintlock has 39 RV sites, 23 tenting sites and 12 cabins. The shower facilities are quite basic, but clean. Cable TV is available with a wide variety of channels. Our satellite worked poorly due to the trees.

We came to Flintlock on the first of August, in part hoping to escape the heat. The weather was certainly milder than Birmingham or Atlanta, but still pretty warm.

The office has several comfortable chairs, and there are some on the front porch as well. There is also a pool table and sodas for sale, but not much else. They do not have any groceries or RV supplies. They suggested Wal-Mart for any basic RV needs. The Wal-Mart is about four miles from the RV park.

We paid $180 for a one-week stay. They also have daily and monthly rates. They accept most major credit cards. If coming from the south, be very attentive for their sign; it is easy to miss, as we did. The Flintlock sign is a bit easier to spot if coming from the north, but you will be going downhill so be alert.

Of course, RV parks, like real estate, have to be judged on location as much as anything. Flintlock Campground is surrounded with towns such as Blowing Rock and Banner Elk. It is about 17 miles from Grandfather Mountain, and the Blue Ridge Parkway is only a few miles away. Appalachian State University is located in Boone, along with a number of interesting restaurants. We “discovered” a small college, Lees-McCrae, in Banner Elk that is worthy of a drive. It is a beautiful campus that holds the distinction of being the highest-elevated college east of the Mississippi River.

Flintlock Campground is located at 171 Flintlock Campground Drive, Boone, NC 28607. Their telephone numbers are (828) 963-5325 and (888) 850-9997. Flintlock's web address is: www.flintlockcampground.com.
