RV Park Spotlight

Ocean Lakes Family Campground, Myrtle Beach, SC

Ocean Lakes Family Campground in Myrtle Beach is the largest campground on the East Coast and one of the largest in the United States. On an average seasonal day, Ocean Lakes has 15,000 to 17,000 guests enjoying the many amenities that have made it a local favorite and a national vacation destination. Ocean Lakes features 3,412 sites on 310 oceanfront acres with nearly one mile of beach front, five bathhouses and more than 400 employees in the height of the camping season.

Built by Mary Emily and Nelson Jackson, along with their five daughters, starting in 1970, Ocean Lakes opened with 30 campsites and one bathhouse. Nelson Jackson was 50 years old at the time.

"People were lined up outside the gate by the hundreds, and we were clearing spots for their campers as fast as they could park 'em," Nelson, now 82, explained. "We could do a lot of things with 310 oceanfront acres in Myrtle Beach, and we've had many lucrative offers, but we believe everyone should have the privilege of enjoying God's beautiful ocean."

Ocean Lakes has won the National Association of RV Parks & Campground's (ARVC) RV Park of the Year award several times-in 1997, 1999, 2002 and 2003-in part due to the park's amenities, guest services and continuous improvements. During 2002, Ocean Lakes opened Sandy Harbor Family Fun Center which features mini-golf, the Splash Zone, three pools with an enlarged pool deck and a 9,000 square foot building that houses Sandy Harbor Games, a café and new bathrooms with changing areas.

By design, Ocean Lakes is very user-friendly. All 893 campsites are large and pull-through and include water, sewer, 20-30-50 amp electric, 70-channel cable TV hookup, a modem-friendly phone jack with free local calls, a picnic table and daily curbside trash pickup. In addition to nearly one mile of oceanfront, other amenities include a huge recreation center with indoor and outdoor pools, year round planned activities, three snack bars, bike rentals, a marine life nature center, golf cart rentals, eight freshwater lakes for fishing, an on-site church service and 24-hour security patrol. Ocean Lakes RV Center adjacent to Ocean Lakes' entrance has trained technicians who provide campsite to service RVs.

The new Camptown Center offers a 100-machine laundromat, drop-off laundry service, a grocery store, outdoor covered outdoor seating, free Wi-Fi, and entertainment like storytellers, musicians and magicians at the deck's gazebo.

The Jackson Family built a campground that campers liked so much they began staying there all year long. Today, Ocean Lakes has 2,519 annual lease sites with the most diverse structures and accommodations offered in the campground industry.

Ocean Lakes Family Campground is located at 6001 South Kings Highway in Myrtle Beach. For campsite reservations, call 877-510-1413 or visit www.oceanlakes.com
