Sights To See

The Central China Television Headquarters
The next time you are in Beijing, take a gander at this building. Standing 768 feet high, it has 51 floors—and no two floors are alike.

The building—known as “Big Pants” to the locals—was completed in December of 2008. Construction was a challenge, as you might imagine. It was completed in two sections and then joined. And oh yes, it was built in a seismic zone.

The St. Louis Arch
Actually, it is the Gateway Arch. If you haven’t seen it and ridden up into it, put it on the list of things to do and see. That is, if you aren’t intensely claustrophobic. The tram you ride up in is small, and they adjust as they rise through the Arch’s catenary curve so you remain horizontal. More than a million people ride the tram up every year—and they survived.

At 630 feet high, the Arch is the tallest national monument. The feet of the Arch are also 630 feet apart. It was opened to the public in 1965. The Arch weighs 17,246 tons.

The Turning Torso
Located in Malmo, Sweden, the Turning Torso does not turn. But there are nine separate segments of the building that are turned, the top one being 90 degrees off from the ground floor.

The building is 623 feet high with 54 floors. It was opened in 2005.

The Biltmore House
I know I’ve written about this before, and there is a whole article posted in the archive, but if you haven’t seen it, you should. The Grand Banquet Hall is like something out of King Arthur. The 250 rooms are wonderful to see any time of year, but Christmastime is special with more than 700 poinsettias and 400 wreaths and bows decorating the home. The Biltmore House is located near Asheville, N.C.

Magnificent Sunsets
These can be seen in many places (in fact, I’d like to hear your suggestions of great places to see the sunset), but the Gulf Coast of Florida always pays off. Orange Beach, Ala., Gulf Shores, Ala., Panama City Beach, Fla., Destin, Fla., and along the coast are great places to see and enjoy a celestial paint pallet. Particularly when there are a few clouds, the sky will be on fire.

Dallas at Night
The Dallas skyline is wonderful because of the many buildings that they alight at night. It isn’t gaudy like Las Vegas. Plan your next trip through there at night.
