New Virginia Map Helps RVers Find 400th Anniversary Events
RVers traveling in Virginia can identify the many communities commemorating
America's 400th Anniversary in 2006 and 2007, courtesy of the Virginia
Department of Transportation (VDOT). VDOT is making the founding of Jamestown
and Virginia's 400-year heritage the focus of the 2006-2008 edition of the
Official State Transportation Map, which will be available in Spring
2006.
The 2006-2008 map's index of cities, towns, communities and counties
will give special treatment to Official Virginia 2007 Communities by
highlighting their listings. These localities, numbering 124 as of August 26th,
are marking America's 400th Anniversary with commemorative events and projects
unique to their own heritage. These range from cultural festivals and new museum
exhibits to new scenic trails and byways.
Jamestown 2007 is coordinating the
Virginia 2007 Community Program and working with VDOT on the special community
listings. Communities that received Official Virginia 2007 Community status by
September 15, 2005 are highlighted in the 2006-2008 state map index.
"The
commemoration will be an exciting time to be in Virginia, with so many events,
programs and activities planned across the Commonwealth," said Lynda J. South,
VDOT chief of communications, whose office produces the state map. "VDOT is
pleased to help consumers make the most of their travels in Virginia and enjoy
this once-in-a-lifetime American milestone."
The new state map will be
available in Spring 2006 at such locations as the official Virginia Welcome
Centers, found at Virginia's interstate borders and Route 13 on the Eastern
Shore, and at many other sites throughout the Commonwealth. In addition to the
printed map, the state map will be available online at
www.VirginiaDOT.org.
